Kuwait Women’s all set for Malaysia for
ACC Twenty 20 Champioship

Kuwait: Tuesday, 30 th June 2009. Kuwait’s women cricket team is all set to participate in the first ever ACC T 20 Women’s Championship for non-test playing Asian Nations being held at Malaysia from July 3-11, 2009. After its much impressive performance at the ACC U 19 Championship at Thailand last year, women’s cricket in Kuwait has tremendously improved and it was indeed a great achievement made by Kuwait Cricket authorities to promote this wonderful game in the oil rich kingdom among which the participation of three Kuwaiti girls in the squad is the most heartening one.

In spite of the scorching heat and unfriendly weather conditions the Kuwait Women’s squad had long training sessions under the watchful attention of Taher Khan & Tariq Rasool and the team is formed of the best up-and-coming young players who have been identified as potential future prospects for the national team. After an intensive training camp at the Kuwait Entertainment City grounds, the Kuwaiti side is well equipped and will now look towards their Asian counterparts for their next international fixture.

ACC has done a wonderful job by organizing such an event and Women's Cricket is a great vehicle for developing women's cricket in Asian region especially in the Middle East and we are delighted to be able to support their growth by offering them all the facilities, said Director General of Kuwait Cricket, Mr. Asad Baig.

The Kuwaiti squad includes talented girls from various schools and along with experiences and knowledge gained during their last tour to Thailand, the team is now looking forward to an opportunity to play a higher standard of cricket. The team has successfully nurtured and given the right opportunities they are bound to prove themselves as a challenging outfit.

The announcement of the Women’s squad certainly paves an important pathway for high performance cricket for women in Kuwait and this initiative taken by Kuwait cricket authorities, especially Mr. Asad Baig who has been the driving force will enhance our national women’s cricket development plans, giving players an opportunity to further develop t heir skills and competence.

Former Asian Test and ODI stars caught the spirit

In commemoration to celebrate ICC centenary year, Kuwait Cricket availed the wonderful opportunity to play an all star exhibition match at Ahmadi, Hubara ground where many International stars of yesteryears participated. Thus Kuwait cricket, as part of its vision to support the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) centenary celebrations hosted the event with the great slogan “Catch the Spirit” to showcase the spirit of the game across the world.

The tournament is one of the ICC’s Catch the Spirit celebrations aimed at promoting the ICC’s centenary, the great spirit of cricket and the wide appeal and diversity of the game. Each of the ICC’s 104 Members is holding an event which captures the collective commitment and values which are central to the sport. The Catch the Spirit flag, the symbol of the ICC’s centenary year, was also present at the tournament, collecting signatures from the icons of the game.
Kuwait Cricket President’s XI
The two sides named after Kuwait Cricket President’s XI & Kuwait Cricket Chairman’s XI included several International players from the Asian region. Kuwait Cricket Chairman’s XI lead by Bandula Warnapura, the first captain of Sri Lankan test team and current ACC Development Manager, had the great Roy Dias the flamboyant Sri Lankan batsman Vinodhan John the fast bowler from Sri Lanka, and Indian off spinner Venketramanna. Naeem Ahmed the ex-Pakistan test leg spinner was another star to play for the team.

Kuwait Cricket President’s XI was led by none other than Asad Baig, the Director General of Kuwait Cricket and had former Pakistan Test and ODI stars to the likes of Iqbal Sikander and Mansoor Akthar. Diwakar Vasu the talented all rounder who had played Ranji trophy for Tamil Nadu and the current fast bowling coach at National Cricket academy at Bangalore were the stars of Kuwait Cricket President's team. Moreover, the team was gifted by the presence of Raqibul Hassan, the former captain of Bangladesh team.

Winning the toss, KC President’s XI chose to bat as Mansoor Akthar & Raqibul Hassan played fluently to post 44 runs opening partnership. Mansoor scored 32 runs with 5 hits to the fence while Raqibul hit 14 runs. It was Vasu Diwakar who proved that he hadn’t lost any of his old charm as he played a hurricane knock of 33 runs with 3 sixes and as many boundaries. Anjum Raza hit a useful 14 runs & Kashyappan played well to score 16 runs. Tim Anderson, the ICC Program Development Manager and former Australian U-19 captain played a gem of an innings as he scored a fluent 31 runs which contained a handsomely driven six over long off. Both Mansoor Akthar & Divakar Vasu retired as per the playing condition which limited the batsmen’s personal score at 30 runs. At the end of the allotted 20 overs, KC President’s XI scored 183 runs. Taher Khan picked up two wickets

Chasing a total of 184 runs to win the match, Roy Dias, the Sri Lankan stalwart opened the innings for KC President’s XI along with British Ambassador to Kuwait, Mr. Michael Aron. Both were in good nick and Roy Dias was in a punishing form as he stamped his class by effortlessly flicking Kaleem Ul Hassan over the mid wicket fence for a lovely six. Priyada Murali, the Kuwait U-19 women’s team captain effected the first break through for KC President’s XI by bowling the well settled Micheal Aron, with a swinging yorker. Roy Dias meanwhile retired after making a sparkling 32 runs. M. Venkatramana, the off spinner who played for India blasted the President’s bowling attack by plundering 33 runs in just 10 balls. Roy Dias & Venkatramana both retired not out after making 30s. They showed they've still got it - the spirit and the class.

Mansoor Akthar , Iqbal sikander & Divakar Vasu
Midway through the game, as the balance favored the President’s XI, Bandula Warnapura along with Naeem Ahmed slowly but steadily built up a partnership and the crowd saw some classic batting from these old stalwarts. An elegant flick to the square leg fence was the shot of the day that Bandula played and Naeem Ahmed’s late cut to the third man fence was a treat to watch. It was indeed a superb team effort by the KC President’s XI as Mansoor Akhtar & Imran Haji took vital catches and Shahriar Khan, the golden boy of ACC Media network dived and stopped at least two certain boundaries which was quite outstanding.
Bandula Warnapura with stylish squirecut for a boundry
Kuwait 's captain Asad Baig, an old war horse of many battles bowled the last over of the match and the wily spinner bowled Vinodhan John with his first delivery but Abdul Qayyum pulled the next ball to the boundary and then took three runs. The match went to the very last delivery as the Kuwait Cricket Chairman's team needed just four runs to reach their target of 184 in the Kuwait Cricket All Stars T20.
Time for vectory celeberation
As the players & spectators were at the edge of their seat and the last ball was bowled by Asad Baig, Abdul Qayyum swung and to the dismay of the Chairman’s XI the ball straightaway landed in the safe hands of Iqbal Sikander at the square-leg boundary, leaving the President’s XI victorious by a slender margin of 3 runs. Tariq Rasool & Asad Baig picked up two wickets each for President’s XI.
The international stars enjoyed the match and it was clear that there were plenty of Kuwait Cricket Officials on the field who can play too, as well as the British Ambassador who showed some fine form.
Both the captains with sponcer Mr. Chandra of Wataniya Airlines
Umpires like Pakistan's Rasheed Bhatti, T.Kashyappan, Sena Nandaveera and Match Referee Naeem Ahmed put on the pads after quite some time. Umpiring doyen KT Francis was on hand to make sure that all behaved well. The match was officiated by two well known & senior umpires of Kuwait umpiring panel.

The spirit was also well truly made to flow by our very gracious sponsor Mr. Chandra of Wataniya Airlines who came on board to make sure that the players had some great souvenirs to remember the day.

Hong Kong Stun Afghanistan To Clinch ACC U-19 Elite Cup
Qualify For ICC U-19 World Cup

HONG KONG WINNER OF THE ACC U-19 ELITE CUP 2009
Hong Kong pulled off a stunning victory over Afghanistan in the finals of the ACC U-19 Elite Cup Cricket Tournament on Friday at the KOC Ahmadi cricket grounds. Watched by thousands of Afghan supporters the Afghanistan team crashed to a shocking 8 wicket defeat as Hong Kong finally showed their real class which was always in them but never so distinct as displayed in the grand finale. The toss was won by Hong Kong on the warm, sunny Friday morning and they decided to field first. Hong Kong duly capitalized on their decision with morning conditions favoring their seamers reducing Afghanistan 21 for in the 7 th over.

However once again their most reliable batsman Asghar Hotak came to the rescue and together with Zard Ali restored the Afghan innings to take them to 215 for 9 in 15 overs. Asghar scored 70 valuable runs with 5 fours and Zard Ali contributed 68 with 7 boundaries. Hong Kong’s success in restricting Afghanistan was mainly through their three bowlers Aizaz Khan (3/26), Niaz Ali (3/34) and Nizakat (3/44).

Hong Kong knew they would be able to achieve this target if they kept their heads and batted sensibly. And that is exactly what they did. With Captain James at the helm and Shakeel Haq as the other opener Hong Kong started cautiously playing every ball on its merit. They collected the runs steadily as Afghanistan became distraught over after over trying to break the opening partnership.
Hong Kong captain James Atkinson Man of the Match 94 runs
The opening stand was worth 121 runs when Afghanistan finally got the breakthrough. Shakel Haq scored a fantastic 51 with 6 fours. There was no respite for Afghanistan as Nizakat continued the job with his captain slowly inching towards the target. The crowd cheered the Afghan team on and finally they got the danger man captain of Hong Kong team with Hong Kong still needing 36 runs for a victory. James was unlucky to miss a well deserved century scoring 94 of 114 balls with 10 boundaries.

Finally Hong Kong put all hopes of a twist of fortunes for Afghanistan to rest pulling off a sensational victory with a few overs to spare. ACC U-19 Elite Cup Final
Afghanistan Play Hong Kong for berth to ICC World Cup

Afghan revellers celebrating semi final victory with the team
After months of preparations, planning and strategies it all will bottle down to today when the finals of the ACC U-19 Elite Cup will be played between highly fancied Afghanistan against the never say die spirited Hong Kong. Kuwait is hosting this prestigious ACC tournament and Kuwait Cricket has put together a lot of effort making this event a success under the leadership of Sheikh Dhari Fahad Al Ahmad Al Sabah and the patronage of Major General Faisal Al Jazzaf, Chairman and Director General of Public Authority for Youth and Sports. Top ranking officials from ACC have been in Kuwait to monitor and support the tournament including the ACC Development Manager Mr Bandula Warnapura, Sports Medicine and Fitness Officer Dr. Vece Paes , and the region Development Officer Mr. Iqbal Sikander along with other senior officials KK Haridas and Shariar Khan. For the grand finale Kuwait Cricket is immensely delighted to welcome the ICC Chief Executive Mr. Haroon Lorgat, President of Pakistan Cricket Board and ACC Board member Mr. Ijaz Butt, and ACC Chief Executive Syed Ashraful Huq. This ACC U-19 Elite Cup tournament in Kuwait has also provided a very good platform to the ICC for their ‘Catch the Spirit’ movement and celebrate the ICC centenary with Tim Anderson, the ICC Development Manager doing the rounds with his television crew to catch the passion of this game in the teams, the officials, the supporters and Kuwait in general.

The final today is expected to be a grand contest between Afghanistan and Hong Kong which will be played at the KOC Ahmadi grounds. Kuwait Cricket has made special arrangements for the Afghan supporters who they expect will arrive in thousands yet again to cheer their team as they have done in the past during the previous ACC Twenty20 tournament.

On Wednesday amongst the thunderous roll of drum beats, Afghan dancing, loud cheers and scores of supporters Afghanistan stormed into the finals of the ACC U-19 Cup Cricket tournament inching towards that prestigious glory where a win would pit them against the best as qualifiers for the ICC U-19 World Cup tournament from the ACC Developing Nations dashing Nepal’s hope. During the keenly fought semi-finals, Nepal who is always a very good fielding side and relying on its bowlers to get them through had batted first after winning the toss. They managed to put up a score of 186-8 in 50 overs which is in that uncertain grey range where on a given day a chasing side gets it easily and then sometimes simply collapses. Prithu had formed the backbone of the Nepal score with 81 runs while Hamza Hotak returned with the best bowling figures of 10-4-18-3 for Afghanistan. The match was nicely balanced midway during the Afghan chase with Nepal taking their top 4 wickets and just half of the runs on the board. However, it was not Nepal’s day as fortune favored Afghanistan. With great mental reserve and application of correct technical skills the daunting partnership of Aimal Wafaa (61 NO) and Asghar Hotak (47 NO) took them into the finals in the 48 th over amongst the deafening roar of the Afghan supporters who had gathered at the KOC Ahmadi Unity ground since morning to cheer their team. Aimal Wafa was easily the Man of the Match.

On the neighbouring Hubara ground, Hong Kong continued their dream run into the finals with a hard fought victory over Qatar. Batting first after winning the toss Hong Kong was all out in the 46 th over with Irfan Ahmed (59) as their top scorer. It didn’t seem a big target to chase but some fabulous bowling complemented by sharp fielding enabled Hong Kong to dismiss Qatar for just 138 in the 49 th over. Only Ashish Kumar managed to put up a fight with a score of 41 for Qatar. Man of the match was awarded to Hong Kong’s Niaz Ali who really put the brakes on Qatar claiming 4 wickets for 26 runs

Kuwait Cricket has been privileged to receive great sponsorship support from Srilankan Airlines, Zajil Telecom, Gulf Bank, BKME, Raja Company, Wataniya Telecom, Nestle, Alam Al Tassameem Advertising Company, Kharafi Business Machines, and Bougammaz Printing Press. Their tremendous support for this tournament has made the event a success par excellence.

KUWAIT CRICKET CELEBERATES ICC CENTENARY YEAR
OLD TIMER SUPERSTARS IN ACTION

Director General Kuwait Cricket Asad Baig , Board Memebr Bousuf Ali Bash and ACC development officer Iqbal Sikander, signing on ICC century year Flag

In a dynamic move Kuwait Cricket has taken an initiative of conducting an All Stars Twenty20 cricket exhibition match on the rest day of the ongoing ICC world cup qualifying U-19 cricket tournament. The match will be held on 28 th April 2009 at the KOC Ahmadi cricket ground, where international acclaimed cricketers assembled in Kuwait for this ACC U-19 Elite Cup are expected to play. These include flamboyant retired test and first class cricketers from India Venkat Ramanna, Hemant Kenkre and Divakar Vasu, from Pakistan Mansoor Akhtar, Naeem Ahmed, Kabir Khan and Iqbal Sikander who is also the ACC development officer for this region, from Sri Lanka Roy Dias, Warnapura Bandula, Vinothan John, from Bangla Desh Raqeeb Ul Hasan, and ICC Development Manager Tim Anderson from Australia who was the captain of their U-19 team who won the junior World Cup. Speaking about this initiative Iqbal Sikander, who himself was one of the members of the successful ICC world cup winning Pakistan team in Australia in 1992, said that this is probably the most delightful way to celebrate the ICC centenary year. It is rare that so many international retired cricketers are assembled together at one place and Kuwait Cricket is very fortunate to have them at their disposal to be part of their celebration. A beaming Tournament Director Asad Baig commented that this is a tremendous opportunity for Kuwait Cricket to rub shoulders in a cricket field with the stalwarts of World cricket who, although retired are still very much connected to the game and we can now see them in action. You can still expect these players to pull a punch whether batting or bowling and witness some class act in a festival environment which is an ideal platform to celebrate the ICC Centenary year. The actual team distribution and match playing conditions will be discussed and finalized in a soon to be held meeting by the tournament organizing committee.
